WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?
Understanding Gum Disease
Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the gums and the supporting bone around the teeth. It is caused by the build-up of bacterial plaque and tartar, which triggers inflammation in the gum tissues. Early gum disease often involves redness, swelling, or bleeding of the gums and may progress quietly without pain. If left untreated, it can lead to gum recession, bone loss, tooth mobility, and eventual tooth loss.
Common Symptoms & Concerns
What are common symptoms of gum disease?
Bleeding gums
Gums that regularly bleed when brushing or flossing are not normal, and indicate gum inflammation.
Swollen or tender gums
Red, puffy or tender gums may indicate active inflammation affecting the gum tissues.
Gum recession
Gums pulling away from the teeth can be a sign of gum disease, and may increase tooth sensitivity and decay risk.
Persistent bad breath
Ongoing bad breath or unpleasant taste may be caused by bacteria below the gumline.
Loose or shifting teeth
Loose teeth or changes in tooth position are a sign of advanced gum disease, and can occur when supporting bone is lost.
Bone loss
Dental X-rays can show bone loss, which is most noticeable in moderate to advanced gum disease.
What to expect during specialist treatment.
Step 1
Consultation
Your periodontist will carefully examine your teeth, gums and X-rays, and measure periodontal pockets and recession.
Step 2
Oral Hygiene Instruction
You will be given detailed instructions on the best home care routine.
Step 3
Periodontal Debridement
The teeth roots are carefully cleaned to remove bacterial deposits. This may take 1-4 appointments, and is best completed with local anaesthetic to numb the teeth and gums.
Step 4
Review
After healing, your periodontist will see you to review how you are responding to treatment. They will measure periodontal pockets and assess your mouth for any signs of inflammation.
Step 5
Periodontal Surgery (if required)
Sometimes periodontal surgery will be an option, for regeneration of lost bone or pocket reduction.
Step 6
Supportive Periodontal Treatment
Together with a thorough home routine, supportive periodontal treatment is the best way to ensure that your periodontal health remains stable and gum disease does not recur
