Understanding Wisdom Teeth
Problems associated with wisdom teeth
Wisdom teeth often don’t have enough room to erupt properly, which can lead to pain, infection, crowding, and damage to adjacent teeth. Early removal can prevent these complications, and your Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon will assess each case individually to determine the best course of action.
Common Symptoms & Concerns
When could it be time to remove wisdom teeth?
Pain or tenderness
Discomfort at the back of the mouth that may worsen with chewing or cleaning.
Pressure on nearby teeth
Limited space can cause pressure against neighbouring teeth and surrounding structures.
Swelling or infection
Trapped bacteria or food around partially erupted teeth can lead to swelling or infection.
Damage to neighbouring teeth
Impacted wisdom teeth may increase the risk for decay or periodontal bone loss at the adjacent teeth.
Difficulty cleaning
Due to the position at the back of the mouth, wisdom teeth are often difficult to brush or floss effectively.
Cysts or other pathology
Abnormal tissue can sometimes develop around impacted wisdom teeth.
What to expect during specialist treatment.
Step 1
Consultation
Your maxillofacial surgeon will assess the status of your wisdom teeth, and discuss the benefits and risks of wisdom teeth removal.
Step 2
Surgery
Wisdom teeth surgery can be performed under general anaesthetic, IV sedation, or local anaesthetic.
WHY REMOVAL MAY HELP
Where wisdom teeth present an ongoing risk, removal may be recommended to address current issues, or reduce the risk of future complications. We base decisions on a individualised assessment of the position of the tooth, symptoms, and long term risk, rather than routine removal. Wisdom teeth removal may be recommended to:
- Reduce future pain and infection risk
- Help protect neighbouring teeth and gums
- Support easier cleaning and long-term dental hygiene
- Reduce localised damage over time
- Lower risk of requiring complex future treatment
