Dr Troy McGowan is a specialist periodontist and healthcare leader based in Brisbane. He completed a Bachelor of Science before studying dentistry and later specialist training in Periodontics at Griffith University.

Clinically, Troy focuses on patient-centred and value-based care, with particular interest in the non-surgical management of periodontitis and the treatment of peri-implant disease. He became a periodontist to save teeth and to help patients manage gum disease in a sustainable, long-term way.

Troy served in the Royal Australian Air Force for 13 years as both a general dentist and specialist periodontist. He deployed on a multinational humanitarian mission to Tonga and later led a deployable field hospital and Australia’s largest operational airbase health centre through the global pandemic.

Following his military service, he spent three years as Executive General Manager – Clinical Excellence for one of Australia’s largest dental service organisations, overseeing clinical standards for more than 1,000 dentists across 200+ clinics nationwide and leading system-wide quality and governance reform.

As well as a clinical periodontist Troy is also currently CEO of Focus Dental Specialists, an A/Associate Professor at CQUniversity supporting the Oral Health Therapy program, and Senior Lecturer at The University of Queensland. Outside of work, Troy enjoys cooking and gardening with his wife and keeping up with his two teenage boys.
