Orthodontics & Orthognathic Surgery
Your ortho specialists will see you now.
Orthognathic surgery usually requires a team approach by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Orthodontist. Both specialists will work together to evaluate your teeth, jaws, mouth, and face, and closely coordinate your care. Your orthodontist has an essential role in preparing your teeth for surgery, and ensuring a functional and stable bite after the operation is complete.

Understanding orthognathic surgery
Problems associated with poor jaw alignment.
Jaw alignment issues occur when the upper and lower jaws do not meet correctly. This can affect how the teeth fit together, how forces are distributed when chewing, and how the jaws function day to day.
In some cases, misalignment contributes to bite problems, facial imbalance, speech difficulties, or ongoing strain on the teeth and jaw joints. Orthognathic surgery is considered when these issues are structural and cannot be corrected with orthodontic treatment alone.
Common Symptoms & Concerns
When it may be time for orthognathic surgery.
Difficulty biting or chewing
An uneven bite can make chewing inefficient or uncomfortable.
Facial imbalance or asymmetry
Differences in jaw position may affect facial balance or overall proportions.
Snoring and Sleep Apnoea
Jaw surgery can improve airway function and may help manage obstructive sleep apnoea.
Uneven wearing on teeth
An abnormal bite can lead to excessive wearing of teeth.
Speech or pronunciation issues
Jaw position can affect how sounds are formed and sometimes impact speech clarity.
Orthodontic limitations
Some bite issues cannot be fully corrected with orthodontic treatment alone.
What to expect during specialist treatment.
Step 1
Referral
Referrals for orthognathic surgery usually come from an orthodontist. If you’ve not yet seen one, we can recommend some practitioners with special interest in orthognathic surgery cases.
Step 2
Consultation
Your surgeon examines your imaging, bite, and facial structure to determine whether you are a candidate for orthognathic surgery.
Step 3
Pre-Surgery Orthodontics
Your orthodontist will position your teeth so that they are in the ideal location for your planned corrective jaw surgery, usually taking 12-18 months.
Step 4
3D Imaging and Scanning
Once presurgical orthodontics is complete, a 3D CT scan and digital intra-oral scan are taken.
Step 5
Digital Planning
Using specialised software, your surgeon digitally plans the jaw movements that are required for the best functional and aesthetic outcome. This plan is used to construct custom guides and plates.
Step 6
Surgery
Under general anaesthesia, the jaws are surgically repositioned.
Step 7
Post-Surgery Orthodontics
Your orthodontist will carry out further orthodontics to refine tooth positions following surgery.
