Treatment of Peri-implantitis
Your peri-implantitis treatment specialists will see you now.
Peri-implantitis is a type of gum disease that affects dental implants. It’s an inflammatory condition affecting the gum and bone surrounding an implant, and is caused by the bacteria in dental plaque and tartar. If left untreated, peri-implantitis can lead to progressive bone loss and potential implant failure. Treatment is difficult and is tailored to the severity of the condition and each patient’s individual needs. The primary goals are to eliminate infection, stop further bone loss, and preserve the implant whenever possible.

WHAT IS peri-implantitis treatment?
Understanding peri-implantitis treatment.
Peri-implantitis treatment involves specialised procedures used to address bacterial infection and bone loss around dental implants. It may be recommended when clinical and radiographic assessment indicates active infection, progressive bone loss, or inflammation that hasn’t responded to non-surgical management alone. Treatment is tailored to the severity of the condition and each patient’s individual needs. The goal is to eliminate infection, arrest disease progression, remove diseased tissue, and where possible, regenerate lost bone to preserve the implant long-term.
Common Symptoms & Concerns
When it may be time to treat peri-implantitis.
Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
Inflamed gum tissue around the implant that bleeds during brushing or probing.
Discomfort or tenderness
Pain or sensitivity around the implant site that persists or worsens over time.
Pus or discharge
Visible suppuration or fluid discharge indicating active infection around the implant.
Gum recession or exposed threads
Receding gum tissue exposing the implant surface or threaded components.
Implant mobility
Looseness or movement of the implant indicating loss of bone integration.
Radiographic bone loss
Progressive bone loss around the implant visible on X-rays or CBCT scans.
What to expect during specialist treatment.
Step 1
Consultation & Imaging
We will assess the health of the gums around the implant, and examine X-Rays for any signs of bone loss.
Specialised 3D imaging may be required to assess the jawbone.
Step 2
Non-Surgical or Surgical Periodontal Treatment
Depending on the severity of the peri-implantitis, non-surgical or surgical treatment may be required.
Step 3
Review
We will see you for review to assess how the implant has responded to treatment, and see whether any additional treatment is required.
Step 4
Supportive Periodontal Treatment
Together with a thorough home routine, supportive periodontal treatment is the best way to ensure that gum health around the implant remains as stable as possible.
Why peri-implantitis treatment MaY HELP
Treatment aims to arrest disease progression and preserve the implant wherever possible. Early intervention typically leads to better outcomes and improved long-term implant survival. Treatment aims to:
- Eliminate active infection and bacterial deposits
- Reduce inflammation and bleeding around the implant
- Stabilise bone levels and arrest further bone loss
- Restore healthier gum tissue and improve tissue contours
- Improve long-term implant survival and function
